Talk: Donald Ross and the Highland Clearances [Tain] ...

06 July 2023

Starts: 14:00

Donald Ross and the Highland Clearances

Talk by Dr Andrew Ross

Organised by Tain & Easter Ross Civit Trust. Venue: Clan Ross room, Royal Hotel, Tain. Non-members £5

This is the story of Donald Ross and his involvement in the Highland Clearances. Donald was born in Clashmore in 1813 and took over the Clashmore Mill, when his father died in 1838. He and his family were subsequently evicted, after fighting against this in the Supreme Court in Edinburgh. He moved to Glasgow and became Agent for the Poor and in the 1850’s was an outspoken critic of the Highland Clearances. The talk by Andrew Ross will concentrate on Donald’s involvement with the Clearances in Ross-shire, Barra, Skye, and Knoydart. The talk will feature “The Massacre of the Rosses in Strathcarron” which involved people being imprisoned in Tain Tolbooth.
